KNOWING YOURSELF IN CHRIST (29)

I thank my God, making mention of thee in my prayers, hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints; that the communication of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus – Philemon 1:4-6

LIGHT FOR NOW: Our love towards the Lord Jesus will be seen in our love towards the saints.

In our previous studies, we have carefully examined Paul’s words in Philippians 1:9-11. Now, bringing the import of this explanation back to our key text (Philemon 1:4-6), what would have Paul been referring to in verse 5 when he says “Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints” or better still, what was “the love and faith” he was talking about? The “love” here (in verse 5 of Philemon 1) was reference to the believer’s love walk. The “faith” here (verse 5) was in reference to the believer’s walk of faith, and not faith as a tool to getting what you want. So it was in reference to the love walk found in the faith walk. In other words, part of our walk of faith is that we walk in love. Meaning, the love walk is in the faith walk. Notice, after he says “Hearing of thy love and faith”, he now says in the next statement “which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints”. The word “and” here can better be understood as “that is”. In other words, he was saying that the love walk which is in the faith walk, which is toward Jesus is towards the saints. That is, our love towards the Lord Jesus will be seen in our love towards the saints. In other words, loving the Lord Jesus here will mean loving the saints. Meaning your love for the Lord Jesus will be seen in your love towards the saints. Observe, he now says in verse 6 “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus”. Don’t forget, the word “acknowledging” here means precise and accurate understanding. The word “fellowship” here which is the Greek word “koinonia” implies fellowship, participation, sharing. So he was saying “That the participation or fellowship of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus”. Faith here will be in reference to what? Faith here will be in reference to the faith walk or better still the Christian life (just like in verse 5). In other words, he was saying that the believer’s Christian life is effective in knowledge. Hallelujah!

INSTRUCTION: Know the word and be effective in your walk of faith.

PRAYER: The eyes of my understanding are enlightened, in Jesus Name, Amen.

QUOTE: The Christian life is effective in knowledge.
