YOU HAVE BEEN LED OUT OF THE FLESH INTO THE SPIRIT (1)

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God” Romans 8:1-4, 14.

LIGHT FOR NOW:  The law of the spirit of life is in Christ Jesus.

It is important to point out first as we begin our studies on this subject that there is a walk in the spirit or better say the leading in or of the Spirit where the believer (the man in Christ) subjects his decisions, actions, or activities to the guidance or leading of the Spirit. In other words, the believer makes his choice, takes course of actions and decisions by the Spirit’s leading. But that is not the leading we will be talking about in this subject. We will be looking at the leading implied by Paul in our key text (that is, being led out of the flesh into the spirit). What could this mean? In other words, what could Paul mean in Romans 8 where he talks about being led out of the flesh into the spirit? This question will be well answered in the course of this studies bringing from today into the subsequent days ahead. Now as we begin, observe Paul’s words in verse 1. In verse 1, he speaks of “them that are in Christ” and in His words, he made it clear that “them that are in Christ have no condemnation”. In other words, there is no condemnation for them. That is why he stated in verse 2 and 3 saying, “For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh”. Notice what Paul intelligently does here (verse 2 and 3); He presented a contrast which is:

  1. The law of the spirit of life.
  2. And the law of sin and death.

Now, he explained the former (that is, the law of the spirit of life) which is Christ Jesus. What Paul has said here is similar to what he taught in the earlier chapter (chapter 7); in Romans 7:6, Paul echoed “But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter”. So, in verse 3 of Romans 8, Paul spoke first about the weakness of the law through “the flesh”, and then about God sending His son (Jesus) in the likeness of sinful flesh, condemning sin in “the flesh”. We will carefully observe his explanation from verse 4 to 7 in subsequent studies for further clarity. Hallelujah!
