GOD’S LOVE REVEALED IN THE GOSPEL (22)

“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come” Matthew 24:14.

LIGHT FOR NOW: In the gospel is the unveiling of God’s love.

In our previous study as we look at Peter’s sermon in Acts 2 and Paul’s words in the epistles, it is clear that Jesus went to hell; He died the death He did not deserve and gave us the life we did not deserve. He delivered them who through fear of death were their entire lifetime subject to bondage (Hebrews 2:15). This is the gospel. He tasted death for us all; from the cross to the place of the dead (hell, called Hades). Hence, all of the Old Testament saints were released from the place (for they had believed the message of Christ preached unto them). The writer of Hebrews in Hebrews 12:23 calls them “the spirits of just men, perfected at last”. Observe the Matthew’s account in this same line of thoughts, it reads, “And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after resurrection, and went into the holy city and appeared unto many” (Matthew 27:51-53). The temple ceased to be “God’s legal place” for dealings. For, “it is finished”. So, when he said “it is finished”, He was not referring to redemption being finished, He was referring to the law; Jesus was referring to the law. His death ended the law. That was the High Priest’s last official assignment (His last sacrifice). Paul says in Romans 10:4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth”. Now as He rose, the saints of old rose with Him. The gates of hell could not prevail. That means the gates of hell could not withstand (it is not an offensive word but a defensive one). We still speak of His death; He will stay dead for three days. And when He is done, our joy will be full. If He had suffered for me, when I believe Him, I must not suffer the same. I can be rest assured knowing that when I am done on earth and my spirit departs my body, it goes not to the place of the spiritually dead, for my Saviour, Lord, Advocate, Redeemer, Brother, Friend and Substitute has been there for me. John says in John 5:24 “I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, the person whose ears are open to my words [who listens to my message] and believes and trust in and clings to and relies on Him who sent me has (possesses now) eternal life. And he does not come into judgment [does not incur sentence of judgment, will not come under condemnation], but he has already passed over out of death into life” (Amplified Version). This is done on perfectly legal grounds. Jesus has been judged for us; He has been there. We are beneficiaries of His pains, His grieves, His descent into hell (the place of the spiritually dead). If He has saved me, then I am saved from the judgment of Hell. I will never come to judgment. Jesus is my substitute in judgment from the cross to hell (the place of the spiritually dead). Hallelujah! This is the gospel! Preach it!

INSTRUCTION: Preach the word.

PRAYER: Father, I declare that the savor of your knowledge is made manifest through me, in Jesus Name.  Amen.

QUOTE: When the gospel is well presented, the sinner man doesn’t see how hot hell is, he sees how good God is that in His goodness, he went to that hell so that the sinner man upon believing in Him can never go to hell.
