LIGHT FOR NOW: The utterances of the prophets in the Holy Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi) were utterances to be fulfilled in Christ which was fulfilled in His death, burial and resurrection.
It is seen clearly from Jesus’ words in Luke 24:25-27 in our previous study that the utterances of the prophets in the scriptures (Genesis to Malachi) were focused on Him (Jesus). Jesus is the subject matter or the arriving point of their utterances. Let’s further observe Jesus’ words in the post text of the same chapter, it reads “And he said unto them, these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Laws of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms concerning me”. Observe in verse 44, he uses the term “concerning” again which shows a double emphasis that the utterances of the prophets were focused on the person of Jesus. Notice the word “fulfilled” used in verse 44, it was translated from the Greek word “pleroo”, which implies to execute or to accomplish a task; it refers to a particular accomplishment. Recall earlier in the pretext (verse 26), he explained all that the prophets spoke was His suffering and He entering into His glory. Therefore, the “fulfilment” inferred in verse 44 will be the fulfilment of what he said earlier in verse 26. In other words, what was fulfilled will be His death (the glory He entered). Thus, by Jesus using the term “all things must be fulfilled…”, He lets us see that the utterances of the prophets were promissory in nature; the utterances of the prophets were the promise of what God will do in Christ in His death and resurrection from the dead. Hence, the Old Testament books of the bible (Genesis to Malachi) could be referred to as a book of promises or declarations to be fulfilled in Christ. No wonder Paul in 2Corinthians 1:20 echoed “For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us”. In other words, the Old Testament is a book of promises or declarations that has come to be (that is, fulfilled) in Christ. Thus, in the utterances of the prophets, Jesus is contained as the promise and fulfilled in His death and resurrection from the death in the New Testament. So, our study of the scriptures will be a Christ study or because He is the message that binds the utterances of the prophets in different times and dispensations together. Hallelujah!!!
