“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”– 2 Timothy 2:15
LIGHT FOR NOW: You cannot benefit from the scriptures without knowing the person behind the scriptures.
When you study the word of God without the basic foundational knowledge of what the Bible is all about, you may not be able to appropriate all that is written about you and for your edification in the Bible. You need to know that the Bible is a book centered on the person of Jesus Christ. What qualified any book to be included in the Bible was that, the book spoke about the prophecies and promises of God in Christ (Genesis to Malachi), as well as the fulfillment of the same prophecies and promises by Jesus Christ (Matthew to Revelation). You cannot benefit from the scriptures without knowing about the person behind the scriptures. Jesus is that person behind the scriptures. Hear Him in John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”. What Jesus meant was that He is the One the scriptures spoke about and that the scriptures are simply testimonies of Him. Also in Luke chapter 24 verse 44, he said, “And he said unto them, these are words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me”. This means that in studying the scriptures, you are to make Jesus the subject of study in order to access Him and what He has made available for you.
The Word of God is not just paper and ink, it is a person and that person is Christ Jesus. John chapter 1 verse 1 portrays this truth. It reads, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. So, a study of the word of God is a study about the person of Jesus Christ and God’s blessing of salvation to mankind, which is in Christ Jesus. The scripture is to give wisdom in area of salvation which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 says, “All scriptures is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness”. Without this understanding, the Bible will remain a story book in your hand. You will only see how Noah built the ark and how the flood destroyed the world, or how David killed Goliath, or how Abraham was about to sacrifice his only son etc; without knowing that all these things were pointers or shadows of the substance or reality of that which was to come.
INSTRUCTION: When studying the scriptures, make sure that Jesus is the subject of study.
PRAYER: I build my study of the Bible on the person of Christ Jesus, appropriating all the prophecies and promises of God fulfilled in Christ, in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: Your elevation in life is tied to the level of your revelation.
